Motorists using one of Cumbria's busiest roads have faced a day of disruption because of a huge lorry fire.

The HGV burst into flames on the A66 at Whinfell, near Center Parcs, Penrith, last night about 7pm.

The flames rose several feet in the air.

The road was closed for several hours while police, the fire service and highways workers made the area safe.

Crews from Lazonby, Penrith and Appleby attended the scene.

A spokesman from the Lazonby crew said: "Due to the wagon content and wind the fire was extremely intense. Crews brought the fire under control and used specialist foam from the Lazonby appliance to extinguish the blaze."

Emergency repairs continued this morning with initial work being completed this afternoon. However, further resurfacing work is due to happen overnight.

Temporary traffic lights between the B6262 (Penrith) and B6412 Cliburn Road (Temple Sowerby) are in place. Disruption is being felt both ways.

* Lazonby, along with other stations across the county, are looking for on call firefighters. Closing date is Friday.
