Children at a Workington school are being encouraged to get active and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Pupils at Ashfield Junior School have started their half term special topic of "healthy me" as part of their personal and social health education (PSHE) studies.

The children were invited to join in hula-hooping, skipping and playing football in the school's assembly, to inspire other children to get involved.

Robert Kyle, year three teacher who leads on PSHE, said: "We're learning about looking after ourselves and how to be healthy and active.

"The aim of the assembly was to get them involved in sporting and fitness activities and show them that it's fun and you don't have to be a sport super star to do it, everyone can get involved.

"It's just so good for the children's general health and mental health. It's important for them to enjoy what they do and take it through the rest of their lives. There was a lovely atmosphere at the assembly and children that hadn't thought about joining one of the clubs we offer are now starting to think about it as something they can do."

The school offers activities such as archery, dance, football, hockey, tennis and gymnastics.

Mr Kyle added: "Through the term children will be learning about being healthy, but as with everything we do, we try to encourage them to bring what they've learnt outside school and into their everyday lives.

"The feedback from them has been extremely positive, they always take everything on board and they love to be involved."
