This baby red squirrel has been rescued after getting stuck near Keswick's Theatre by the Lake.

Kind-hearted Karl Farkas, the theatre's maintenance manager, spotted the little animal in difficulty - and went to his aid.

The baby squirrel, which is around four weeks old, is now been looked after at the Knoxwood Wildlife Rescue Centre in Wigton where it is being given some much-needed TLC.

Meg Eyre, the theatre's marketing manager posted details of the rescue online.

She said: "Last week our maintenance manager Karl rescued a baby red squirrel outside the theatre; the baby squirrel was on his own and was crawling down a tree, almost falling, and heading onto a busy pedestrianised road. Karl put his hand out and the squirrel crawled on to it.

"First of all Karl attempted to put the squirrel back up the tree on a high limb but it kept on nearly falling off. He then tried the woods at the back of the theatre but after an hour found it crawling around on the forest floor.

"In the end we took the squirrel to Knoxwood, the animal rescue centre in Wigton. They say that the mother would have most likely been killed and that the squirrel, who was approximately three weeks old at the point of rescue, would have most likely been the second litter this year and would probably have died on its own."

She said Knoxwood is now caring for the red squirrel.

"He’s in an incubator and is being fed unpasteurised milk," she said. "He will be going onto solids soon and once he’s old enough they plan to release him back into the wild in an area where there are squirrel boxes and a regular supply of food."

Karl, and his children, have since visited the tiny animal at the wildlife rescue centre.

He said: "I went back with my kids last week and we had a look at the little fella. He’s made a bed in a soft toy and has a heat pad and is doing very well. It was a great way to spend a morning at Knoxwood."
