THE West Coast Main Line is now back open after rail passengers experienced significant disruption throughout the day.

Trains were cancelled between Preston and Glasgow and Penrith and Oxenholme because of damage caused by Storm Caroline.

Trains between Euston and Glasgow have been affected by severe weather which has led to lines being blocked and trains being cancelled because of unavailability of staff.

An update this evening from National Rail states: "All lines are now open between Oxenholme Lake District and Penrith, following disruption earlier caused by an obstruction on the track and a broken down freight train.

"Services may still be delayed by up to 25 minutes or revised due to trains and train crew being displaced."

Disruption was expected to continue until 8pm.

Caledonian Sleeper passengers are advised that tonight's northbound Highlander service has been cancelled, as has the southbound one tomorrow.

Train operator Virgin said in an earlier update: "Due to severe weather between Preston and Glasgow Central the South-bound line is blocked.

"Impact Train services running through these stations may be delayed by up to 90 minutes."

Additionally, engineering works between Preston and Barrow is this week causing some disruption.

Northern said: "Planned engineering work will take place between Preston and Barrow-In-Furness from 21:47, Monday 04 December 2017 to 06:00, Friday 08 December 2017.

"Monday to Thursday (FX) The 2147 Preston to Barrow-in-Furness service will terminate at Carnforth. The 2200 Manchester Airport to Barrow-in-Furness service will terminate at Carnforth.

"Tuesday to Friday (MX) The 0435 Barrow-in-Furness to Lancaster service WILL NOT RUN."

Crosscountry are conveying passengers between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street in both directions until further notice.

Northern are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice. Virgin Trains East Coast are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.
