Two men accused of assaulting a female couple during a "homophobic" attack have given evidence.

The jury at Carlisle Court had heard earlier that Laura Price was left with blood spurting from a heard wound after she was set upon at about midnight on August 18 last year.

She told the court she was repeatedly kicked by three men as she lay on the ground beside Penrith Leisure Centre.

Her partner Yasmin Wood had her face stamped on, she told the court.

Kevin Alexander Docherty, 35, of Castlebay Street, Glasgow, and his co-defendant Kyle Hill, of Glenafeoch Road, Carluke, both deny two allegations of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Prosecuting barrister Gwen Henshaw suggested to Docherty that he had not sought help after the attack, because he did not want the police to investigate what had happened; and that was because he had been involved in the assaults.

"No. I was not," retorted Docherty.

Miss Henshwaw said the "split" second contact he admitted to having with Miss Wood had been when he had assaulted her.

The defendant replied:"Absolutely not."

Under questioning from His Honour Judge Peter Davies, Docherty said he had "restrained" Miss Wood.

He said that he had seen a third man - 29-year-old Ross Paterson - kicking Laura Price while she was on the ground.

In his evidence, Hill said he had been a passenger in a HGV that was driven to Penrith that day by Docherty.

During a night out in the town, he drank five or six pints and while he was drunk he was not "falling about" drunk.

When the three men encountered the two women, Paterson instigated making homophobic comments, which Hill said he found disgusting, said the defendant.

"I wanted to stay as far away from the situation as possible," he said. "I didn't want anything to do with it.

"I was disgusted."

He denied making any derogatory comments himself, or encouraging Paterson, from Unitas Crescent, Carluke, to do so.

The trial continues.
