The devastated family of a man killed in a car crash have described him as a “unique” person, loved by all.

Alan Schofield died after being struck by a car on a rural north Cumbrian road.

Cumbria Police yesterday identified the pedestrian as 57-year-old Mr Schofield, who was from Newtown. He was understood to have been walking along the A6071 between Newtown, near Brampton, and Laversdale Lane, in

Brampton, when he was hit by a VW Golf on Thursday afternoon. Mr Schofield was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement released yesterday, his family said: “We are devastated at the loss of a man who was at the heart of this family.

“Alan was always positive and cheerful and was a unique person, loved and respected by all who knew him.”

Emergency services were called at about 4.40pm on Thursday after reports of a collision between a silver Volkswagen Golf, driven by a 25-year-old woman from Longtown, and Mr Schofield.

A second pedestrian, a 22-year-old man who was believed to have been walking with Mr Schofield, suffered minor injuries.

The car driver and her seven-year-old passenger were taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle where they were also treated for minor injuries.

The road was closed until 11pm on Thursday. Police are asking witnesses to call 101.
