The clerk of Whitehaven Town Council has been sacked, the News & Star understands.

Les Abrahams was suspended from his role last week, and it is understood that the town council took the decision to dismiss him last night (Tuesday) . The reason for the decision has not been made public.

Mr Abrahams, who was not permitted to be present at the meeting, told the News & Star today (Wednesday) that he has been told unofficially of his dismissal. It is understood that the council will notify him of the decision in writing, and the council declined to comment publicly until that time.

Mr Abrahams added that he considers his departure as "unfair dismissal" and intends to lodge an appeal.

Mr Abrahams was appointed to the £37,000-a-year role in December last year. He became the council's first permanent clerk following its formation in May 2015.
