The team behind a west Cumbrian bar and restaurant have raised a glass to celebrate a prestigious national award.

Dianne Irving, the owner of The White Mare in Beckermet, was named as the Best Newcomer in Britain as the annual Great British Pub Awards.

Widely regarded as 'the Oscars' of the pub and bar trade, the awards attract thousands of entries from across the country, and Dianne was presented with her accolade by event host, top television comedian Katherine Ryan.

"I am delighted with what we have achieved in such a short time at The White Mare," said Dianne, a former primary school headteacher who, following a 25-year career in education, reopened the refurbished bar and restaurant in May 2015.

The award completes a double success for the White Mare team, after being named the Best Pub in Cumbria as the National Pub and Bar Awards earlier this year.

Dianne added: "I could not have dreamed that we would win at both of the main trade pub and bar awards in our first year of operation.

"I am particularly proud of our staff, who have worked tirelessly to deliver fantastic meals, drinks and service to our customers.

"It is also great to get recognition for the village of Beckermet, which has supported us from day one."
