Parents have been warned that they will be fined if they park or wait on yellow lines or zig zags outside a Carlisle school.

Cumbria County Council has told the headteacher of Kingmoor Nursery and Infant School that is is "very concerned" about the serious congestion outside the school at Lowry Hill.

The congestion is being caused by illegal parking when children are dropped off and picked up from the school on Hether Drive.

The council has informed the school that it will be issuing penalty charge notices of £70 during the morning and afternoon drop off and pick up times from October 2.

In a letter to parents headteacher Zoe Turner said: "Please may I remind you that you must not wait or park, or stop to set down and pick up passengers on school entrance markings.

"You must not wait or park on yellow lines during the times of operation shown on nearby time plates. Double yellow lines indicate a prohibition of waiting at any time.

"Parents should park outside these areas and walk with their child to school."

The fine will be reduced to £35 if it is paid within 14 days.

Mrs Turner added: "Our local police community support officers will also be attending.

"After an initial period, enforcement will be taking place regularly without further notice."

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said: "The markings are there to keep the children safe.

"The school is being proactive by letting parents know about this."

Kingmoor is the latest in a series of schools across Cumbria where issues surrounding parking have been raised.

Operations - sometimes involving police - have previously taken place in other parts of the county to deter problem parking or take action against those responsible for any issues.

There has been comment on social media about parking issues surrounding other Cumbrian schools since the start of the new term.
