A thug who kicked a door supervisor in the face and left him with serious injuries will be sentenced by a crown court judge.

At Carlisle's Rickergate courts complex, Carl Swan, 24, pleaded guilty to an offence of assaulting Jonathon Jenkins, causing him actual bodily harm, on June 27, near to the Walkabout nightspot in Botchergate, Carlisle.

The court heard how the defendant attacked his victim just before midnight as Mr Jenkins was attempting to separate Swan from the other persons who were involved in a disturbance.

“The defendant kicked Mr Jenkins in the face, rendering him unconscious,” said prosecutor John Moran.

“It was witnessed by a number of people, and was described as a deliberate and forceful kick in the face.

“As a result the victim sustained serious injuries.”

Mr Moran went on to describe the serious extent of the injuries sustained by Mr Jenkins in the attack.

They included a nose fracture so serious that the victim will now need nasal surgery to correct the damage.

As a result, he was experiencing persistent nasal obstruction.

The kick also caused damage to three of Mr Jenkins' teeth, which had required detailed dental treatment.

The prosecutor added that the assault – which had involved the defendant's shod foot used effectively as a weapon – was so serious that it should be dealt with by a judge at the city's crown court.

District Judge Gerald Chalk told Swan, of Ullswater Road, off Wigton Road, that his powers of sentence was inadequate for such a serious offence.

He ordered background reports and sent the case to Carlisle Crown Court for a hearing on October 28.

The defendant was granted conditional bail.
