Three weeks of roadworks in a Cumbria high street are due to begin today.

The scheme to upgrade Penrith's ageing gas pipes is being carried out by Northern Gas Networks (NGN) and will see the town's main shopping area shut off.

The work in Middlegate will see more than 100m of existing metal pipes upgraded as part of a three-week project.

Due to the location of the gas main, NGN says it needs to close the road at the junction of Cromwell Road and Middlegate for the duration of the project. Signed diversions will be in place.

The gas provider told The Cumberland News the works have been "carefully planned" with Penrith town council and Eden Council to ensure they are completed as quickly and safely as possible.

A spokesman for NGN said: "It’s expected these works may cause some delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel.

"Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual throughout the project."

Richard White, business operational leader for NGN, added: “We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may encounter, and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible."

Despite the advanced warning and apologies, traders in the town centre feel as though the closure could further add to what already are tough times for retailers.

Local business owners hope townsfolk and visitors will continue to support them throughout the works.

David Lister owns two businesses in Middlegate - Finesse Jewellery and Finesse Bridal.

He said: "All of the traders are concerned that closing the road will affect trade. Previously when Middlegate has closed trade has been affected."
