Thirty new jobs will be created when a new sports bar and grill opens in Carlisle - providing a welcome boost to the city's nightlife scene.

Players Sports Bar and Grill will open next month in the Botchergate premises formerly occupied by Mint and Mood nightclubs.

The sports bar and grill will operate from the ground floor of the building and will be split into two areas.

One will have pool tables and TV screens showing sport and the other area will be for food, but will also have a projector and 50ins screens so no one misses a kick.

The menu will consist of steaks, burger and chicken and there will be a focus on local produce and reasonable prices.

General manager Dave Tattersall, 32, who is from Carlisle, said: "The food will be fresh and locally sourced - as much of it from Carlisle as possible. We will be using local bakeries and butchers. I think that's important.

"Emphasis will be on the quality of the food and good service.

"We are all very excited about this. I think the concept will be a really good thing for Carlisle.

"The bar is evolving every single day and it looks like a completely different place."

The bar is owned by Yorkshire's former Capital FM DJ Danny Oates.

He said: "An excellent opportunity came up and after 15 years of being a DJ I decided to go for it.

"Bars and clubs have also been part of my life through by role as a DJ.

"We've got an excellent head chef at the helm. Our food will be good but we won't be charging gastro prices."

Mr Oates said his first experiences of the city had been good.

He said: "Carlisle does seem like a lovely place. It's very picturesque and the people are lovely."

The bar is expected to open seven days-a-week from breakfast to midnight.

It will be offering links with sports clubs like Carlisle United and aims to attract students, who are returning to their studies this month.

Mr Oates said: "We are close to the council offices and so we may look at a discount scheme we could run with them."

Players Sports Bar and Grill Carlisle, which has its own Facebook page, will open in early October.

Mint opened in August last year and closed a couple of months ago.

In its hey day, Mood was once one of Carlisle’s most popular nightclubs, with large queues regularly snaking along Botchergate on weekends as people waited to get inside.
