The Department for Transport has guidance on how you can stay safe when driving on roads covered in ice and snow.

The Highway Code details what steps you should take to ensure you stay safe on the roads.

Their guidance advises drivers to constantly check the weather forecast for snowy or icy weather, and to only drive in these conditions if "absolutely necessary".

If the journey is essential, drivers are advised to give extra time and also carry the following items:

  • de-icer
  • ice scraper,
  • warm clothing and footwear
  • shovel
  • First Aid kit
  • warm drink and emergency food

Before you set off, you must also do the following things:

  • ensure you can see through all windows
  • make sure all lights and both registration plates are clear
  • check that all mirrors are clear and that windows are demisted thoroughly
  • remove any snow that might fall into the path of other road users
  • check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfall is expected.

Road safety guidance body Think!, are also offering advice:

The DfTadvises that when driving in icy or snowy weather, people should:

  • drive with care, even if the roads have been treated
  • keep well back from the road user in front as stopping distances can be ten times greater than on dry roads
  • take care when overtaking vehicles spreading salt or other de-icer, particularly if you are riding a motorcycle or cycle
  • watch out for snowploughs which may throw out snow on either side. Do not overtake them unless the lane you intend to use has been cleared
  • be prepared for the road conditions to change over relatively short distances
  • listen to travel bulletins and take note of variable message signs that may provide information about weather, road and traffic conditions ahead.
