A KEY milestone in Cumbria’s flood recovery will be marked tomorrow with the reopening of a vital road link.

An event has been planned to officially open the temporary bridge which has been constructed over the River Eamont at Pooley Bridge.

The original stone bridge was completely destroyed in the floods last December.

The event has been planned to involve the whole community.

It begins at 11.45am when Penrith Town Band will play.

Dignitaries will deliver welcome speeches at midday before the Bishop of Penrith blesses the bridge at 12.20pm.

The first cars will drive over the bridge, constructed by Story Contracting, just minutes later.

Celebratory activities for the community will take place afterwards. They will include free trips from the nearby steamer jetty.

All local businesses will also be open for business.

The reopening of the route coincides with this weekend’s Marmalade Festival.

The festival’s home at Dalemain House is just five minutes from Pooley Bridge.
