A talented toddler is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his famous namesake by becoming one of the world's top golfers.

Three-year-old Rory Walker, who featured in an advert on Sky Sports, has spent time on the course with some of the sport's biggest names, including former world number one Rory McIlroy.

The Frizington youngster has played on the European Junior Tour and is one of the stars of an advert for golf brand Callaway.

Rory was invited to The Oxfordshire Golf Club for filming after his father David Walker posted a picture of his son playing golf on Callaway's Facebook page.

"They gave him some practice balls to hit and then gave him a target to hit, he smashed it past it," said David, who has been playing golf for about 16 years.

"It is used on Sky Sports 4 during the PGA Tour coverage. When it first came on he'd run to the telly and say 'that's me!'."

David, Rory, his mother Bethany and 10-month old brother Reed attended the British Masters this year, where he got the chance to practise his putting with professionals Tyrrell Hatton and Ian Poulter.

He has also met Hao Tong Li and McIlroy, who he caught in the face with his putter while posing for a picture at the Scottish Open.

David said: "He just laughed it off and had a practice with Rory's little putter. They say don't meet your heroes, but these are everyday people who are just playing the sport they love."

The youngster, who has a membership at Seascale Golf Club, is also set to enjoy a practice round with Andrew 'Beef' Johnston at the 2018 Scottish Open.

His father put out a plea on Instagram to get the player to sign a golf ball for Rory but Johnston's caddie got in touch to offer them a game as well.

Rory's budding talent has been spotted by the University of Arizona, where coaches want updates on his progress.

And he became the youngest player on the European Junior Tour when he competed in the under-six competition for the first time last year.

"Rory was the youngest ever to play in it, he'd just turned two," said David. "It's where Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton started their careers."

"We're not pushing him, if he wants to play then we'll play. Rory enjoying himself is the biggest thing.

"I think someone has to be number one, so why not Rory? We're very proud, no matter what happens what he has done is phenomenal."

Rory, who has been playing golf since he was about 14 months old, can hit the ball around 50 yards with his seven iron.

David said: "I bought him a plastic set for his first birthday, it was one thing I'd always wanted to do."

And Bethany said: "He first started hitting a basketball and the balls got smaller from then."
