Carlisle's most artistic family is brightening up the city again.

In the past few years Paul and Tina Leith and their daughter Lydia Leith have painted several public murals.

Now they have created three more in their signature sunny style.

One is in Tullie House's new 'Secret Garden' and the others are at the city's railway station.

For the pair of station murals, commissioned by Virgin Trains, the Leiths were given the theme of celebrating Cumbrian railways past and present.

The murals are on the lift at Platform Four; the station's busiest platform which serves the West Coast Mainline.

One mural features an abstract map of Cumbrian stations with a classic steam train and a Virgin Pendolino. The other depicts a steam train emitting a 'Welcome to Carlisle' message.

Paul said: "I like steam trains and we saw a few going through the station while we were painting. It was a fun project.

"We painted a mural for the station a few years ago [for the 2014 World Cup] so it was a real honour to be asked back.

"Having a loose brief allows me to use my experience to create the best I can with no restrictions. Hopefully it will attract more people to explore Cumbria by train."

Virgin Trains customer service assistant Liam Edmondson said: "The World Cup mural was a great success. It was just up for a few months. We're hoping these ones will be up for a lot longer.

"The idea is to promote rail travel. We left the creative side to them.

"A few staff chipped in with the painting but it was mainly Paul and Lydia.

"The feedback has all been positive. It's good for the station. It just brightens the place up."

Tullie House's Secret Garden is a community area intended for schools and community groups, as well as birds, bees and butterflies.

The garden has seen the museum's unused walled green space transformed into an inner-city haven for people and nature.

Ideas for the mural here were gathered during several workshops. Paul incorporated them into a design which was chalked on by him and painted in by volunteers.

Paul said: "The wall was the perfect size, location and surface to paint on. All the people involved were nice and we had perfect weather throughout.

"Project co-ordinator Lindsey Atkinson was super to work with. Collaborating made the outcome better than if I had done it alone. It was highly enjoyable to be involved."

Tullie House has worked with volunteers from organisations including Unity, Carlisle Key, Carlisle Mencap, The Conservation Volunteers, Making Space, Carlisle Young Carers, Cumbria Youth Offending Service and Creative Wellbeing.

The Secret Garden has been made possible by the Postcode Local Trust; a charity funded by People’s Postcode Lottery. The project was also part of Give A Day To The City last month. This saw local businesses lend a hand.

Tullie House is looking for groups who would like to help build birdhouses, bat-boxes and bug hotels. As the project develops it is hoped there will be picnic benches and nature trails.

Locations for other Leith family murals in Carlisle include the underpasses at Hardwicke Circus and the toilets at Hammond's Pond. They also painted the interior of a bird-watching shelter at Talkin Tarn.

Lydia Leith is best-known for her royal wedding sick bags, which became a world-famous souvenir of the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Paul is a commercial artist whose work includes a set of Royal Mail stamps. Tina has had a painting in a Royal Academy exhibition.

Paul has completed another mural and is currently looking for somewhere to house it.

"In my studio at home I have just painted an eight-foot-square mural on wooden boards of five Spitfires flying over fields. I am looking for a location for it to be displayed. I love doing paintings and I am excited to see what the next project might be."
