Storm Hector is set to bring 70mph winds to Cumbria tomorrow.
The county has been placed on alert for strong winds from 3am with a Met Office-enforced yellow weather warning in place until 3pm.
Forecasters said the winds were due to start tonight with them ramping up through tomorrow morning, gradually moving eastwards.
The storm is set to hit the British isles tonight, with Ireland first to be affected.
A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Westerly winds are likely to gust between 50 and 60 mph in many areas and possibly around 70 mph in some exposed locations.
"Winds should gradually ease from the west during Thursday afternoon.
"In addition, a spell of heavy rain will accompany the wind with the highest rainfall totals over parts of western Scotland."
STORM HECTOR - Strongest winds affecting west of Ireland tonight then moving north across Scotland through Thursday. Risk of winds gusting up to 70mph in the most exposed areas. Ferry disruption likely, and given trees are in full leaf, some tree damage is possible. #StormHector pic.twitter.com/AkjHwpostn

The warning covers much of northern England and Scotland.
There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected.
The Met Office also warns that there is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs and there could be power cuts.
