More than 300 bus drivers across Cumbria are planning to strike following a dispute over pay.

Stagecoach drivers from depots in Carlisle, west Cumbria, Penrith, Barrow and Kendal are set to stage a walkout on October 2.

The stand-off between the company and members of the union Unite are said to centre around their annual pay increase.

"We have been in talks," said Malcolm Carruthers, Unite's regional officer based in Carlisle.

"A pay rise was due in May and we've been in talks since then and it has been rejected by a considerable majority.

"There's been a vote on industrial action and the first day of action is planned to be Monday, October 2."

Fresh talks between the two parties are planned and Mr Carruthers said that they hope they can reach an agreement.

It is unclear what the affect on public transport routes would be if the strike goes ahead.

Stagecoach is the county's biggest bus operator.

In a statement provided by Stagecoach, a company spokesman said: "Our priority is to seek a solution that is in the best interests of our employees, our customers and the long-term sustainability of the bus network.

"Discussions with trade union representatives are continuing and we have a further meeting arranged.

"There is no reason why an agreement cannot be reached through continuing dialogue, avoiding any unnecessary disruption to vital transport links for the community."
