A search is continuing amid fears a person may have fallen into a Carlisle river.

Firefighters yesterday spent four hours combing the River Eden, in the Cargo and Rockliffe area.

They did not find a casualty or body, but police have now confirmed that the search is continuing.

Police officers have been in the area today, and more activity is expected tomorrow morning.

It is not clear whether officers are searching for a missing person, or responding to a sighting.

Yesterday's operation saw fire crews from the Carlisle East and West stations carrying out a search of the river itself and river bank.

Starting just after 1pm, they used swift water equipment - including a boat - and techniques to conduct the search.

They returned to base just before 5pm.

A Fire Service spokesman said: "Nothing was found and the search was stood down at dusk."

The River Eden has been swollen in recent days after a spell of wet weather.

Police search dogs have also been seen working in the area.
