Six-hundred dogs made the trip to Keswick to take part in a much-loved fun dog show.

Scruffs took place on Sunday as part of Keswick's Midsummer Festival, a three day event organised by the town council.

Dogs competed in over 20 categories to be crowned dog with the most appealing eyebrows, waggiest tail champion, best biscuit catcher and scruffiest dog.

Tony Lywood, who is on the town council events committee, said: "This was the best Scruffs ever and the most well attended.

"We had around 1,000 people coming through for it."

Dogs also took part in a dogtathlon and a small terrier racing.

Mr Lywood described the event as a little bit bohemian, the Keswick way of doing things.

Battle Heritage also performed a Medieval battle, wearing armours and brandishing swords.

The three-day festival started with a rock night on Friday with headliners Queen II and other bands including Hard Bop, Waters Edge, and the 102s.

Coun Lywood said: "It was fantastic, the crowd really loved it, we had about 1,500 people in Market Square.

"The pubs around Keswick carried on with the entertainment, it was a real knees up kind of night."

Fitz Park hosted Prom In The Park on the Saturday, with classical music ranging from Puccini, Mozart, Strauss and Verdi and brass bands.

Coun Lywood said around 5,000 people attended the festival over the weekend.

He added: "It was a totally brilliant event, this is the town council actually giving back directly to the community.

"Everybody was involved, we had a huge amount of local support and businesses have put their hands in their pockets and helped generously - Lake District Hotels, Caterite and Podgy Paws.

"It's the first time we've put all these events together, I'm absolutely shattered but it was fun, it was worth it."
