Children from a flood-hit school proudly signed a book they have created about the floods and the devastating impact on their village.

The book, entitled Do I Need Wellies Today? , was written and illustrated by pupils at Blennerhasset Primary School, in Blennerhasset, near Aspatria.

On Saturday, children from nursery through to year six signed copies of the book at Waterstones in Carlisle city centre.

Jillian Harrison-Longworth, 38, headteacher at Blennerhasset School, originally had the idea for the book and is extremely proud of the end result.

She said: “It's amazing. I love it. I'm so proud of the children for going through that whole process of the ideas and writing it and the process to here, where you can smell it and feel it.”

Blennerhasset School was flooded five times between November and December 2015 and its outdoor classroom was completely destroyed.

Jillian said: “Following the floods a lot of the children were demonstrating quite a lot of anxiety – like whenever it rained asking is it going to happen again.”

With a background in therapeutic intervention, Jillian decided writing and drawing about the floods could help the children.

She enlisted the help of Cumbrian illustrator,Tim Stead, who did some illustration classes with the children for the book and designed its front and back cover.

The book follows the story of geese, Clarence and Matilda, who live in Blennerhasset.

Children put their imagination into gear and created characters like a T-Rex, which rescues the village hall from the rising water, and a Super Pig and Hulk Frog.

The book has a superhero theme as Clarence and Matilda help rescue the villagers and protect the houses and school. During the floods, Jillian said many of the children saw their parents as superheroes as they tried to protect their houses from the rising water.

Allison Rowe, (CORR) manager of the Carlisle Waterstones, was very impressed with the book and said the store was delighted to support it by holding a book signing.

She said: “We thought it was such a tremendous thing that the children were being so proactive about such a horrendous thing.

“A lot of our customers have been affected by the floods so it's something we take very seriously.”

Do I Need Wellies Today? costs £6 and all funds raised through sales will go towards the £65,000 Blennerhasset School is trying to raise to build a new, flood resilient extension to the school.

Since the floods, the school has relied on a temporary cabin for much needed extra space – in five years numbers have increased from 38 to 65.

The new sandstone extension, in keeping with the school's buildings, will give the school the additional, permanent classroom space it badly needs.
