A safety review is set to be carried out in Keswick town centre amid concerns over kerb stones in Market Square.

The town council agreed to fund an independent audit of the kerbs using £2,000 from its contingencies.

A meeting heard the review would be carried out by a company used by Cumbria County Council, meaning the authority, which is responsible for highways, should have regard for its findings.

Earlier this year a Freedom of Information Act request revealed that North West Ambulance Service had attended 53 falls in the Market Square in four years.

The town council has also issued forms to all retailers in the square for people to fill in if they have tripped or fallen over the kerbs.

The county council has previously offered assurances that the design and construction of the square was done in line with national standards and subject to safety audits, including after construction.

Councillor Graham Kendall said: "I think it's very clear that Cumbria County Council don't want to do anything and need to be pushed into it."
