Roadworks on the A595 at Cardewlees to allow repairs to the gas network to take place have been extended.
The works between Carlisle and Thursby had been scheduled to end this week but updated information from Northern Gas Networks now suggests the work won't be finished until next Thursday.
Traffic lights are in force at Cardewlees, about three miles west of Carlisle, outside the Esso filling station. A 100m stretch of one lane between the filling station and the roundabout for Orton Grange is blocked off for the works.
The works have caused huge tailbacks at rush hour.
It is unknown why the works have been extended at this stage.
