Rugby rivals from two of Carlisle biggest clubs took to the pitch to remember a young player who lost his brave battle with cancer.

Friends of Ollie Armstrong and his family were at Carlisle's rugby club in Warwick Road for a charity match in his memory.

They included players and coaches of Ollie, who fell in love with the sport during his time as a pupil at the city's Trinity School.

In special shirts designed for the match, Carlisle RFC took on a squad from Creighton Rugby Club.

Every shirt was emblazoned with Ollie's surname on the back and players and spectators held a minute's applause before the match began.

Ollie, of Gleneagles Drive in Belah, died in April having fought Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. He was 21.

Ollie and his brother Charles, now 19, both played for Carlisle RFC during their teens before heading off to university.

The squads were competing for the newly-created Ollie Armstrong Memorial Cup, a large trophy which bears a picture of the popular player.

In a close 29-28 result, Creighton picked up the silverware.
