A man who bombarded his ex-girlfriend with phone calls has been banned from contacting her for five years.

Michael Allan Wise, 33, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court, having previously admitted harassing Addelle Tomlinson between October and April.

Richard Archer, prosecuting, said Wise and Miss Tomlinson were in a relationship but split up in 2016.

"From the point of separation, the defendant phoned Miss Tomlinson's mobile phone. If she didn't answer the phone he would continue ringing nine or 10 times until she answered," said Mr Archer.

"Miss Tomlinson felt he was trying to exercise some control over her even though they were no longer in a relationship."

Wise admitted making excessive calls, attending her home address and going to her place of work.

But Mr Archer said: "At no stage did he make threats."

The court heard Miss Tomlinson contacted Wise scores of times after changing her phone number.

Mark Shepherd, defending, said "there were very much two sides to this story". Wise had spent time in custody, where he accepted and sought support for his mental health.

"He feels a great deal better," Mr Shepherd told the court.

"He is desperate to avoid a situation in future where he finds himself back in custody."

Wise, of Maxwell Road, Kingstown, Carlisle, also received a 12-month community order. He must complete rehabilitation, a building better relationships course, and was banned from contacting Miss Tomlinson for five years.
