Residents were left shocked at the news of a man being stabbed on Pennine Way last night.

A man in his seventies was stabbed and a man in his fifties arrested after the incident at around 8pm.

Stephen Weston, 39, who lives in the area, said: "Nothing like this ever happens here, it's quite a nice area. I never saw any police last night."

Another resident said: "It's normally a quiet area, I'm shocked. I was in last night but I haven't heard a thing. You do hear police going up and down because we are near the police station but I didn't see any vans last night."

Police, who also recovered a knife at the scene, charged the man with grievous bodily harm with intent and criminal damage.

He is due to appear at Carlisle magistrate court tomorrow.

The victim was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary and later released.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen someone acting suspiciously in the Pennine Way area at the time.

Anyone with information should call Cumbria police on 101.
