Rescue services from across West Cumbria took part in an exercise at Harrington marina at the weekend.

Maryport Inshore Rescue, Workington RNLI and Maryport Coastguard were among the teams taking part in the exercise organised by Solway Adventure Sailing Club on Saturday.

Michael Messenger, station officer at Maryport Inshore Rescue, said the teams practised entering a life raft.

He added: "It's important for everybody involved to practise these techniques. It was a sort of refresher to remind people what you can expect in these situations."

Around 25 people from different teams were involved in the exercise, which was initially due to take place at Maryport Marina, but changed to Harrington at the last minute because of concerns from marina staff about health and safety.

A spokesman for the Maryport Harbour Authority said: "The harbour authority regrets the exercise was cancelled. However, any such event needs to have satisfactory health and safety planning and documentation. With all the relevant documentation in place, the harbour authority would encourage and participate in future exercises."
