Reality television star Joey Essex is in Cumbria this week.

He is spending a day with 2,000 staff, students, parents and guests at Ullswater Community College (UCC).

Youngsters will also get the chance to grill the reality star, who has 3.5 million Twitter followers, on his career and life to date in question and answer sessions.

The Londoner's television shows have included "Educating Joey Essex", a series which saw the 27-year-old take on a range of intellectual challenges including sitting GCSE exams.

He has appeared on TV since 2010.

After becoming a household name in The Only Way Is Essex, Joey has gone on to appear in I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, The Jump, and most recently The Crystal Maze.

He is described as a "contemporary, honest and genuine" star who may, by his own admission, not be academic but is a keen supporter of young people who wish to take up vocational courses including apprenticeships.

Joey, who is launching his own clothing line this year, is also an ambassador of the Saunderton-based Child Bereavement Charity.

Joey is the latest celebrity to visit Ullswater Community College in Penrith for its annual Prize Day celebrations.

A year ago it was the turn of boyband Union J and in 2015 Coronation Street actress and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Georgia May Foote visited the school.

Over 130 prizes will be awarded to students past and present on Thursday in recognition of their individual qualities that the college values.

There will be two events.

The first, at 11am, is for 11-14 year old pupils at the school. The second, at 1.45pm, is for those honoured in years 10-13.

The celebrations will include performances by students in gymnastics, music, drama, dance and cheerleading.

The UCC cheerleaders recently won the UKCA 2017 National Schools Cheerleading Championships.

Local firms, community groups and individuals have sponsored many of the prizes which will be given out.

Nigel Pattinson, the school's recently retired headteacher and Prize Day director, said: "The range of talent, academic potential, sporting prowess, musical ability and artistic flair across the college is stunning.

"Added to that there are students who make outstanding progress during their time here and others who do remarkable things in the service of their community or who display a superb attitude towards others.

"We’ve decided to spend one day in the school year making as big a fuss about these things as possible."

He added: "We’re delighted that Joey Essex has agreed to help us to do this and I’m sure that we’re going to enjoy all of the performances that showcase the prize presentations."
