Police have identified a man who died in a Carlisle scrap yard.

Paul Spence, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene following Thursday morning's incident.

Cumbria Police and the Health and Safety Executive are now jointly investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Spence's death.

A spokesman for the force said: "The death occurred when a customer became trapped by a piece of machinery at Michael Douglas Auto Salvage Ltd in Carlisle.

"He was treated by North West Ambulance Service and the air ambulance but sadly died at the scene."

Originally police reported that he had been airlifted from the scene, but they have since confirmed Mr Spence, from Skipton, was treated by air medics at the scene who were unable to save him.

Police would like to speak with anyone who may have information in regards to the incident who has yet to come forward.

They are urged to call police on 101 quoting incident 71 of February 15.
