Part of the A596 is blocked because of an overturned vehicle.
It follows on from a two-car crash between a Seat and Renault at 10.40am this morning.
The problems are affecting the stretch of the road towards Wigton. The crash is believed to have taken place close at Micklethwaite, between the town and Thursby.
The Renault car has ended up on its roof.
The road is partially blocked both sides, reports suggest, and traffic is backing up in the area.
Paramedics are at the scene.
A police spokesman said: "A road closure has just been put in place at Thursby roundabout whilst both vehicles are recovered."
Bus routes between Carlisle and west Cumbria are also affected.
No one is believed to have been seriously hurt.
* The road reopened shortly after 1pm.
