Police caught 70 speeding motorists on a busy stretch of road during just two sittings with mobile cameras.

Drivers who break the speed limit in the Chestnut Hill area of Keswick are being warned by officers that action is being taken by the force.

Following concerns raised about speeding issues from residents in the area, and in consultation with the Casualty Reduction and Safer Highways Group (CRASH), Cumbria's police force has taken steps to resolve the problem.

In a crackdown on speeders, officers used mobile cameras twice in June and caught 70 motorists driving too fast. They were then issued notices of intended prosecution.

Officers have also been working with the Highways Agency to make a number of improvements to the road including upgraded street lighting and markings.

Police also warn that the mobile speed cameras will be used more in this area in the future and there will likely be further road safety improvements made.

Inspector Rachel Gale said: “Chestnut Hill was flagged up as an area where drivers were flouting the speed limit and causing concerns for residents.

"These concerns were investigated and have resulted in not only action being taken against drivers ignoring the 30mph limit on the road but also improvements being made.

“Speed limits are set for the safety of all and I would urge any motorists who use this stretch to heed this warning and ensure their speed remains within the law.”

Residents in many areas which have seen problems with speeding have joined forces to form Community Speed Watch schemes, which are backed by Cumbria Police.

Volunteers using professional devices monitor speed at selected locations and the details of offending motorists are passed to the police.
