A key Cumbrian road north of Carlisle was blocked as the emergency services dealt with a five car crash this afternoon.

It happened on the A7 at Westlinton, but police have confirmed that none of the injuries sustained by those involved were life-threatening, though some people were taken to hospital to be checked over by medics.

The accident, at 1.19pm today, involved:

* A Hyundai Tucson, driven by a 62-year-old man from Longtown.

* A Mercedes-Benz Vito, driven by a 48-year-old man from Dumfries.

* A Toyota Rav4, driven by a 51-year-old man from Longtown.

* A Peugeot Expert, driven by a 45-year-old man from Carlisle.

* A Volkswagen Passat, driven by a 32-year-old man from Shap.

The drivers of the Hyundai Tucson, the Peugeot Expert and the Toyota Rav4, and the teenage male passenger of the Toyota Rav4, were all taken to hospital.

Cumbria Police confirmed that the road was blocked for a period whilst emergency services attended the scene but it is now reopened.

Anyone who witnesses the incident is asked to contact PC 2265 Stabler on 101.

Two weeks ago, there was another multi-car crash at Westlinton. It involved several cars as well as a light goods vehicle.

The road was blocked both ways while police dealt with that crash.
