Councillors will visit the earmarked site of a controversial housing development before deciding whether to give the scheme the go-ahead.

Swift Homes want to build 27 houses, ranging from bungalows to detached properties, next to Mill Howe in Lamplugh.

The plans also include a 19 space car park, village hall and a new village green with a pond and shelter.

Some villagers have called the scheme "totally inappropriate" and are calling for the application to be thrown out as they believe it will have a negative impact on the landscape and character of the area.

But applicants Swift Homes say it has received public support for the planned development, which it believes would significantly benefit the village.

A spokesperson said: "We conducted a consultation quite a few months ago now, inviting people's thoughts who lived in Lamplugh.

"At the time we received feedback from both people in support of the venture and people against it - as would be expected.

"We can understand some people not wanting to change things and people not wanting houses built near them.

"However our developments are in keeping with the local vernacular, we would utilise Lakeland stone, Buttermere slate and we always invest a lot in mature landscaping.

"Copeland villages are some of the most picturesque in the county, offering stunning scenery and easy access to our local towns, however they would also benefit from new energy and investment.

"There is a shop open all year round in the caravan site that could be utilised more, a very good primary school that has capacity and it would be great to see the pub open again."

At yesterday's planning panel for Copeland, members decided to visit the site themselves before casting their votes.

A report by council officers states: "The application raises a number of planning issues and has been subject to a significant amount of local interest from both the parish council and local residents.

"On this basis it is considered appropriate for members to undertakes a site visit to fully appraise all of the material planning considerations prior to the determination of this application."
