It's the biggest day of the year in Silloth - and the town's annual carnival didn't disappoint.

Thousands of people turned for the event, lining the town's famous cobbled streets three times over in some cases just to get a glimpse at the parade.

This year organisers decided on a circus theme for the carnival and townsfolk certainly made the effort.

Kelly Hillier formed a group of friends and family to create the Cirque du Silloth float.

"We started making this in January and have a lot of time making it," she told the News & Star .

"Every year for the last four to five years we have done this. The children love it and a lot of effort goes in for them.

"This is great for Silloth, with people coming together to support the town."

The parade, led off by carnival queen Kaysie Henderson, started in Skinburness Road before making its way along Solway Street and Eden Street, before going along the packed out Criffel Street.

After floats had completed the parade, they parked up on the green so families and visitors could get a further glimpse at their creations.

On the green there was a variety family fun and entertainment for people to enjoy, including a fun fair, stalls and a stage for live music.

Organiser Mandy Kerr said: "It's gone really well. We were just hoping the rain managed to stay away.

"It's great to see everyone down and supporting it because we've all worked so hard."

People from all over north and west Cumbria come to see and take part in Silloth Carnival, which is one of the area's most popular.

Among those travelling was the Dance Ranch group from Whitehaven, who had a spot in the parade.

Leader Tracey Pattinson said: "We have been here for the last five years and just love the atmosphere and how laid back it is.

"We're always made to feel really welcome."
