Fitness fun was the order of the day as hundreds of children took part in a mini-triathlon.

About 700 youngsters ran, swam and cycled in Annan at an event that was all about setting them on the trail to a healthier lifestyle and to embrace exercise throughout their lives.

The Annandale and Eskdale Mini-Triathlon Festival, held at Annan Swimming Pool, was organised by Dumfries and Galloway Council's Active Schools for Community Sport team, Triathlon Scotland, the British Triathlon Trust, and Triathlon Trust Dumfries and Galloway, which receives funding through the Holywood Trust.

Jeff Lever, who heads the council's children, young people and lifelong learning committee, insisted that fun was the biggest factor of the day.

He said: "The mini-triathlon events are non-competitive and all about taking part.

"The children gain a great sense of achievement by completing the swim, cycle and run.

"With adaptations for all abilities and fitness levels, the event was very inclusive and met our council's priorities of providing the best start for all our children and being inclusive."

His deputy, Councillor Ros Surtees, added: "Physical activity is vital in developing a healthier, smarter, stronger Scotland.

"Events such as this are a great opportunity for young people to try new activities and, hopefully, encourage ongoing participation."

Every child who took part received a medal, with some scenes of excited celebration at the finish line.

One teacher described the day as "wonderfully inclusive", saying children had a great time.

Organisers thanked Annan Academy for the use of the facilities during the school day and for providing sports leaders to help. They also thanked all the volunteers, sports leaders, teachers, and helpers for their support.
