Two cousins have been jailed for a brutal attack on Botchergate in Carlisle that left a man with a fractured eye socket.

Andrew Leitch Purves, 35, and Thomas McQueen Purves, 38, were sentenced today at Carlisle Crown Court.

The pair both admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent following an assault at Déjà Vu on Botchergate on April 15.

The assault was brought to end when a door supervisor intervened.

The court heard how the victim, 51-year-old Stephen Lowe, was knocked to the floor and kicked repeatedly. The pair also stamped on his face, leaving a footprint.

He was left with a fractured eye socket, missing teeth and a gash to the back of his head.

Mr Lowe needed surgery as a result of his injuries.

Thomas Purves, from Wallyford, near Musselburgh, was sentenced for four years and four months. Andrew Purves, from Newcraighall - also near Musselburgh - was jailed for four years.

Acting Detective Sergeant Rob Ewin, North Cumbria CID, said: "This was an unprovoked and serious assault which was no doubt fuelled by alcohol.

"This type of behaviour is unacceptable and the actions of the defendants, captured on CCTV, clearly show their aggression in not only assaulting the victim but also those coming to his aid.

"Assaults of this nature have disastrous consequences for victims and wherever possible offenders will be put before the court."
