Staff and children at a Carlisle nursery wore their pyjamas every day – to show their support for a brave tot who is battling cancer for the second time.

Workers at Home from Home Nursery in Atlas Works, Denton Holme, are doing what they can to help 18-month-old Fletcher Fisher, who was diagnosed with cancer for the second time this year in September.

Fletcher, of Barley Edge, Botcherby, was initially diagnosed in January with a large tumour on his liver.

After receiving chemotherapy, by July he was in remission and for seven weeks he lived a normal life like any other toddler.

But last month his family were given the devastating news that he had relapsed and the cancer had spread.

Fletcher has been put on a myeloid sarcoma treatment plan.

It is not known how much longer Fletcher will be treated for but he is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

The nursery took part in The Sick Children’s Trust Pyjama Party, which has supported the youngsters’ family, providing accommodation for his dad Lee, so he can be with his son throughout his on-going treatment at Leeds Children’s Hospital, where his mum stays on the ward.

Deputy manager Rebecca Barwick, who is good friends with Fletcher’s mum Leanne, said: “He’s so helpless. He’s a little baby. It’s awful. He’s going to be a big brother in December as well. I just want Leanne to know that they’re in our hearts, the door’s always going to be open for him when he’s well enough to come back.

“He made a big impact on everybody in the short time he was here and we can’t wait for him to come and play again.”

She added: “He’s such a boy, he’s cheeky, he’s mischievous, he loves messy play – he’s just a bundle of fun.”

This week children were taking part in a number of activities, including baking, for their pyjama party.

Meanwhile Rebecca and another colleague are due to take on a fire walk in January to raise money for Candlelighters, another charity which supports the families of children with cancer.

Lauren Dooler, who has a child at the nursery, has pledged to cut her hair for the Little Princess Trust.
