Amazing scarecrows have been wowing residents and visitors in a north Cumbrian village.

Thirty-five scarecrows have been dotted around the village this week and a few more in a central display in a marquee.

The week long festival of straw creations, which kicked off on Monday, will culminate tomorrow with tea, cakes and a barbecue on Walnut Field in Hayton, near Brampton, between 2pm and 4.30pm.

This will be followed by a raffle and scarecrow prizes and presentation.

The winner of the best scarecrow will also be announced, along with those claiming second and third prize.

Anyone wanting to take part in the trail can buy a map from the village green or the Stone Inn for £1, with proceeds going to HCP.

People can vote for their favourites by filling out the form included.

About 30 people in the village got involved in this year's event, which is based on a pirate theme.

And organisers, Hayton Community Project (HCP), have installed a pirate scene - complete with ship - on the village green.

The Bowers family designed a paramedic scarecrow while the Gibson family designed a witch scarecrow.

Fran Scales, who is part of HCP, said: "I think the number of entries is up on last year and the standard is very high.

"I would be hard pushed to say which is the best as people have really tried.

"The entries are very appealing to children. There's a nice Hickory, Dickory, Dock, the BFG and Mrs Tiggy Winkle hanging out her washing.

"In the centre of the village is a pirate ship.

"It's nice because it's something that the family can do out in the fresh air. Something they can do together.

"People could get the bus here and bring a picnic if they didn't want to drive.

"Hayton is a safe village to walk around - the cars don't drive fast."

Fran's husband Dave, who is also involved in HCP. said: "It's gone very well - particularly when the sun is out.

"We've had lots of leaflets back with people wanting to vote for their favourite scarecrow."
