Three wards at Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary are closed to visitors due to an outbreak of norovirus.

The trust which runs the hospital has suspended visiting on Maple B, Maple D and Willow C.

Willow C was the first to be closed off last week.

Norovirus, known commonly as the winter vomiting bug, causes vomiting and diarrhoea and is unpleasant for anyone but it can be particularly dangerous for people with other medical conditions and the elderly.

A statement issued on the trust's social media read: "If visiting is felt to be essential please speak to the ward manager.

"The situation is being reviewed and we’ll provide another update tomorrow.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
