A new police chief for Cumbria has joined the county force after tackling national crime.

Mark Webster is the constabulary's new assistant chief constable - making him its third most powerful officer.

He replaces Sean Robinson, a former Carlisle detective, who has retired.

Mr Webster has transferred to Cumbria from the National Crime Agency, where he was director of intelligence and operations.

He has also served at Greater Manchester Police, which he joined in 1992.

Chief Constable Jerry Graham - the county's most senior officer - said: "He will be a great asset to our chief officer team and to the constabulary as a whole."

He also paid tribute to Mr Robinson, saying he "was an extremely valued member of the Cumbria policing team throughout his 27 years of service".

Mr Webster said: "Having been a regular visitor to Cumbria over many years, I now feel extremely honoured and excited to be working here."

"I believe my former experience with Greater Manchester Police and the National Crime Agency will help me continue to enhance Cumbria Constabulary’s focus on protecting people."

Cumbria's crime commissioner Peter McCall said: "Mark brings with him a wealth of valuable skills and experience which will complement our chief officer team."
