A string of road revamps are planned for a Cumbrian town.

Penrith could be set to get a series of new parking restrictions, including no waiting areas, disabled bays and no loading zones.

The roads set to receive changes include Gilwilly Road, Middlegate, Clifford Road, Southend Road, Ullswater Road outside Castle Park, Norfolk Place, Brent Road outside Beaconside School and Mardale Road.

A report to Cumbria County Council's Eden Local Committee says: "The proposed changes are a result of requests and comments from various sources as well as reviews of existing restrictions."

The council received some complaints from businesses on the Gilwilly Industrial Estate regarding inconsiderate parking and difficulties they were having accessing properties.

The report adds: "A desire for new parking restrictions on Gilwilly Road was identified.

"A proposal was developed to introduce two new 'No Waiting At Any Time' restrictions around two junctions on Gilwilly Road.

"This received support following an informal consultation in February.

"We are proposing to amend the restriction on the south west side of the road outside the community centre.

"The restrictions were originally proposed to help improve access to the businesses and as such are only required during business hours.

"We are therefore proposing a less onerous 'No Waiting Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm' restriction on this section to allow users of the community centre to park outside."

A new No Loading restriction is to be introduced on Middlegate, in the town centre, so there are no obstructions and this area can be used for turning vehicles.

This comes after lorry and bus drivers said they were experiencing problems leaving Burrowgate onto Middlegate because of parked cars.

The report says: "This is also causing vehicles to drive onto the footpath, damaging the pavement and posing a hazard to pedestrians."

A new No Waiting At Any Time restriction is set to be introduced on Clifford Road, close to its junction with Ullswater Road, following safety concerns.

And on Southend Road, the proposal is to remove the disc parking places restriction and replace it with a No Waiting 8.30am to 4pm restriction.

A second parking place will also be included.

Two new disabled parking places are also planned on Ullswater Road, outside Castle Park.

No Waiting At Any Time restrictions are proposed for Norfolk Place following concerns from residents over inconsiderate parking.

A full School Keep Clear order is proposed for Brent Road outside Beaconside School.

On Mardale Road a No Waiting At Any Time restriction is to be relaxed and re-introduced on three different sections on the road.

A meeting to discuss the proposals takes place on Wednesday at 10.30am at the Control Room at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service headquarters in Penrith.

The proposals are recommended for approval.
