Meet Katie - one of the youngest businesswomen in Carlisle.

For the Brampton teenager has just taken over the running of an established tearoom on the edge of the city centre - and has already stamped her mark on it.

Katie Goodchild has bought the popular Cecil Street cafe Anazao Tearoom and Gallery with financial backing from family members.

Previous owner Ros Whitaker retired last month and 19-year-old Katie has spent months working hard on relaunching the business as her own.

It has even included a relocation - but regulars need not worry. It can be found just a couple of doors away, and still in Cecil Street.

Anazao Tearoom by Katie opened for the first time on Saturday.

Its opening hours will see Katie and her mother Elaine welcome customers five days a week, Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Katie, a former pupil of William Howard School in Brampton, said: "The lady who owned the business, Ros, retired and we bought it and moved premises so it has disabled access.

"It didn't used to have it as it was down steps. We're still on Cecil Street but we're now at number 46, couple of doors down."

Katie, who finished her sixth form studies last July, has had to give the premises a refurbishment and fit a kitchen.

She said: "I finished my A levels and it has always been something I've wanted to do but never thought I'd be able to. My parents have encouraged me and are supporting me, as is my sister Emma and other members of the family."

Katie has experience in the trade having worked part time in local cafes including New Mills Fish Farm, Brampton and the Reading Rooms at Walton.

"I've always enjoyed the customer service side of things," said Katie. "I love meeting new people and that is what I'm looking forward to here."

Snacks, meals and drinks will be served up in a range of tearoom crockery and the menu will include paninis, homebaked pastries and a range of teas and coffees.

The cafe can also be booked for parties on Sundays.

"It's going to be an early start for us every day as everything is going to be homemade, apart from the bread," said Katie.

"I'm really nervous, but excited to be welcoming people in."

Mum and daughter duo Elaine and Katie have also completed food, safety and hygiene courses ahead of the opening.
