Bells are set to be installed at a West Cumbrian church in memory of those who died in the William Pit mining disaster and World War One.

Eight new bells are set to be installed at St Bridget's Church, Moresby, and the community is invited to get involved in the historic project.

The aim is to create a modern ringing centre for the community's use, with training equipment and resources, new electric wiring, providing safe access to the belfry and sound control.

Bell ringer Chris de Cordova said: "If anyone would like to make a donation towards the overall costs of this exciting project, whatever amount they wish to give, it will be most gratefully accepted. Gift aiding will increase the value."

"We would also like to dedicate a bell to those lost in World War One - the bells will be ready to ring for the centenary of the final year of this war. In most areas, bells were cast in 1918 to mark the end of the war, but this did not happen in West Cumbria, so this would be a first. Donations can be specifically directed to this bell."

"We also plan to dedicate another bell as a tribute to those lost in the William Pit mining disaster and their families. Any contributions towards the costs of these two would be most welcome, and we would record names of family members remembered as part of these. Donations can be specifically directed to this bell, too."

People can contribute towards the cost of one bell, choose the inscription and/or its name, to commemorate someone special, or choose the name of a saint who means a lot to them.

Chris said: "We already want to name the smallest Bridget and the largest John, for the saints of the two churches involved."

Those who want a memorial inscription will be able to see the bells being cast and take part in the baptism and dedication of the bells service.

The bells will be cast by Taylor's or Loughborough. Once they are installed, contributors will have the chance to take free lessons to learn to ring their bell.
