Enthusiastic pupils at a Copeland school have tried their hand at African drumming.

Master musician Zozo Shuaibu, who is originally from Sierra Leone, visited Montreal Primary School, at Cleator Moor, to pass on his skills.

The sessions, which saw Zozo play the djembe, a drum originating from West Africa, are part of a programme lead by Cumbria Music Service.

“We are an instrumental and vocal teaching service and we provide opportunities for young people in Cumbria to experience music education beyond the usual curriculum,” said Simon Yeo, manager of Cumbria Music Service, which is part of Cumbria County Council.

“The African drumming sessions are part of that programme. Our master musician Zozo visits the school once every half-term to lead live drumming sessions.”

Pupils spend the time in-between Zozo’s visits practising on the djembe, with help from their teachers.

Mr Yeo said: “He teaches drumming techniques on the djembe and he’s also an extremely competent storyteller.

“He does intensive sessions with the children and also does a lesson for the class teachers so they can deliver the project while he’s away.”

Cumbria Music Service has a team of specialist music teachers to provide schools and students with a range of musical experiences.

It is the lead partner for Cumbria Music Hub, bringing together local organisations from across Cumbria to deliver the best music education for children.
