Ten years after a motorbiker was killed in an accident, his friends and family will gather to complete the journey he never got to finish.

Experienced motorbiker Noel Daley died 10 years ago, aged 37, after a collision with a tractor on the Eamont Bridge to Tirril road, near Penrith.

His sister Helen Hughes, 53, of Newfield Drive, Kingstown, Carlisle, said she can hardly believe it's been a decade.

She said: "I never in my life thought I'd see 10 years go so fast.

"In some ways it seems so, so long since I spoke to him, but in other ways, I'm like 'What? How did that happen?'."

Noel's family love that the Noel Daley Memorial Bike Run is still going, and that now people who didn't even know Noel take part.

Helen said: "We thought maybe after four or five years it would dwindle, because you don't expect people to carry these things on, but it just gains momentum."

Noel had many hobbies including skiing, camping, fishing and fire juggling.

"He was such a big, gregarious chap but he would never have realised in a million years how popular he was," said Helen.

Every year on the Saturday closest to April 13, when Noel died, his friends rev up their motorbikes to complete his ride from Carlisle to Pooley Bridge - and then hold a party in the evening.

Today (SAT) more than 200 bikers will gather at Club Rock car park on Englishgate Plaza, Carlisle, and set off on the run at 12.30pm.

They will return to the club tonight for a party, which is open to anyone, at 8pm, where rock band Empress from Leeds will perform.

Apart from giving Noel's friends a chance to remember and honour him, the aim of the run is to raise awareness of bikers on the road and raise money for charity.

"We hope people look a bit harder and think a bit more," said Helen.

"It's turning something that was so bad into something good."

Leviathan MCC has organised the memorial run every year apart from two years.

The run has raised more than £19,500 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service, CFM's Cash for Kids and more recently, Cumbria Wheelchair Sports Club.
