A popular model exhibition proved to be its most successful ever - despite a false rumour it had been cancelled.

Maryport Model Club's 2017 showcase battled huge odds to ensure the public knew it was still on.

Spokesman Trevor Austin said about 1,000 people visited the exhibition at Netherhall School in Maryport on Saturday and Sunday.

This is despite the fact that someone had posted an item on Facebook claiming the show had been cancelled.

"We have absolutely no idea who did that or why," Mr Austin said.

He said Sunday afternoon proved the quietest time, due, he believed, to roadworks and slow changing lights on Curzon Street.

"Traffic was backed up and tempers were getting frayed," he continued.

"There was work being done. The usual traffic lights were not working and the temporary ones were keeping motorists waiting for ages."

Despite all that, exhibitors and visitors turned up from across the north west, north east and Scotland.

"We had one man who was on holiday from Australia. Others came from New Castle, Barrow,, Morecambe - from all over," said Mr Austin.

He said one father had come and thanked him for the help and advice his son had had from every exhibitor.

"That was really good to hear," he added.

The exhibits included everything from a Dalek to a minature drone that flew around the hall like a small bird.

There was an airplane flying outside where another drone was put through its paces.

"It was a great weekend and we were told that the pie and pea lunches from Rafferty's in Maryport were the best ever," Mr Austin said.
