A ceremony to mark Merchant Navy Day was held in Workington on Sunday.

Mary Bainbridge, mayor of Allerdale, was joined by representatives from the Sea Cadets and local veterans to mark the national celebration at Allerdale House.

She said: "I am delighted that we have been able to mark such an important occasion. Raising the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day has given us the opportunity to show our respect and appreciation for the brave work that the Merchant Navy do for us all, and I am grateful to those who joined us on the day in support."

Hundreds across Britain took part in the Fly The Red Ensign campaign by Seafarers UK to honour those who kept the country afloat during both World Wars and celebrate the modern day Merchant Navy seafarers who are responsible for 95 per cent of the UK's imports.

The county council also flew the Red Ensign on its flagpoles at Kendal’s County Hall, The Courts and Cumbria House to mark the day.

Councillor John Bell, Chairman of Cumbria County Council, said: "Merchant Navy Day is a great way to show our support for the servicemen and women who kept our 'Island Nation' afloat during both World Wars. It's a wonderful opportunity for the whole nation to show its support and appreciation. Cumbria County Council is proud to be flying the flag."
