Mega-iron man Gary Mckee is halfway through his tough challenge to run 100 marathons in as many days.

Gary has vowed to take on the gruelling task to raise money for charity in memory of his father, Victor, who would have been celebrating his 80th birthday this year.

And so far the 47-year-old has notched up more than 1,400 miles, raising nearly £20,000 along the way.

He has now hit the 50th day of his feat, but has admitted it is an extremely difficult task.

"It was always going to be tough to run 100 marathons in 100 days," said Gary, of Cleator Moor.

"There's been some difficult moments, but you've just got to get on with it and carry on."

Gary gets through the hard times by remembering the worthy cause he's running for – Macmillan Cancer Support – and says he's very fortunate that many of his supporters are running and cycling part of the way with him.

The father-of-three will finish on April 23 when he runs the London Marathon.

And even when he's on a family holiday, Gary still manages to fit in his daily marathon. Last weekend he was on a trip to the Isle of Bute in Scotland and he managed to carry on with his challenge.

He gets through the days by eating and sleeping well, and having three massages a week.

"I always thought it was something I was going to do," said Gary, a shift team leader at Sellafield.

"A lot of people have donated and I'm pleased and proud that I'm on track to raise the money."

As well as sponsoring Gary, the community is getting behind him by organising a number of fundraisers.

These include a charity night at Wath Brow Hornets on Saturday MAR 11 and sponsored spinning sessions which are taking place at Whitehaven Sports Centre.
