A Maryport street that is in darkness is set to be lit up again.

But the work will cost £42,000 and a Cockermouth scheme is likely to be put on the backburner as a result.

Problems with an underground cable system in Maryport resulted in street lights in Victory Crescent not working.

On Wednesday, the county council’s local committee for Allerdale is expected to push through plans to carry out lighting works in the town.

But it would mean that work planned for Highfield Close in Cockermouth would be pushed back to the next financial year.

Dominic Donnini, the county council’s corporate director for economy and highways, said: “There are currently issues with the underground cable system in the Victory Crescent area of Maryport that need to be addressed, as large areas are currently in darkness.”

The faults are on the border between the north and south of the town, but there is currently no budget allocated to address the issues.

There is cash available – £27,000 – from underspends on completed lighting schemes at Hunday Court in Workington and Seaton.

“In addition we wish to remove the funding for Highfield Close, Cockermouth this year and put it into Victory Crescent,” added Mr Donnini.

“Highfield Close currently has a budget of £15,400. The lighting here is in good order and working correctly, with no faults.”

The money was due to be spent upgrading the existing light columns to improve future maintenance access.

Money allocated for a scheme in Grange Park, Keswick, is also expected to be switched to fund lighting work at Manor Brow in the town.
