Steven Clark, 29, was reported to police by a member of the public who saw him with a blade in Workington on September 25.
Clark had taken the knife from a friend’s house and was using the broken-tipped item as a makeshift screwdriver to repair a bicycle.
Carlisle Crown Court heard he was wearing a hood to stop flies going into his mouth while travelling on the push bike.
Having pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article, Clark was sentenced by Judge Barbara Forrester.
Although he had committed two similar offences as a juvenile, Judge Forrester concluded it would be “unjust” to send him to prison for his latest crime.
Instead, a two-month jail term was suspended for two years.
Clark, of Midtown Close, Workington, was given a 30-day rehabilitation requirement and a two-month night time curfew.
